The Drama Club is a very well known part of NorthStar. It’s a fun, low stress way to learn a bit about theater, and is a great place to make friends! But, in February of 2021, a new branch of it was launched called the Aspiring Filmmakers Team. The AFM is a section of the club for those who enjoy making and learning about movies. It was created by a high school student named Sophia, who is now one of the managers. “I love all aspects of filmmaking,” she said, “and being able to facilitate and lead a team that I get to share that love with others is a true blessing.” The AFM is a place created for all ages and levels of expertise, whether you’re a professional producer or just a beginner, there’s a place for you!

The AFM is a student-led club, with six student leaders of various ages and backgrounds. Mrs. Foster, who runs the main Drama Club said, “I love that AFM grew out of the specific ideas of passionate students—it wasn't something teachers forced on anyone.” Another one of the AFM managers, Zoe, talks about how she found a Teams post from Sophia, asking people to join her film club. Curious to see what a student-led film club would be like, she asked if she could join. “Sophia came back to me and asked if I wanted to join the AFM leaders. At first, my intention wasn’t to be a manager of the AFM, but when she asked me that question, I felt that I really wanted to lead a club. I wanted to make new friends and be involved in activities at NSA, so I decided to take up the offer.”

Activities range from weekly Buzzfeed movie quizzes, to monthly short film contests, and everything in between. Sarah, an elementary schooler, participates in many AFM events. She states that she enjoys the wide range of activities, such as singing songs from movies, as well as the Buzzfeed quizzes. At the recent Back to School Bash event, the AFM Team held a few calls to celebrate the new school year, and to announce some new activities coming down the pike, such as “Treasure Tuesdays” and “What’s Up Wednesdays”!

The Aspiring Filmmakers Team is a very unique group. It’s the first NorthStar club to be inside another club, giving participants double the fun! Sophia says, “My dream for the team is that we create a comfortable and safe space for people to express themselves. I know that for a lot of people, even me sometimes, creating something that may be a little different to the “normal” and showing it to people, can be nerve wrecking!” With new students from all around the globe joining NSA for the 21-22 school year, and exciting activities ready to be launched, the Aspiring Filmmaking Team has a bright future ahead!  So what are you waiting for? Join the club today!
