This is a video introducing the Navigator as a class! It presents some of the history of the Navigator. However, the Navigator is NOT a new class this year. It was changed from a club into an official class a few years ago.

INFORMATION

The NorthStar Navigator class will be called NAVI280 and will be under a teacher who functions as the teacher advisor for the class. The paper is still a student-run newspaper with students writing, editing, and publishing the articles. The teacher advisor will function as a way to smooth out the process, improve the quality, and be a valuable resource for the newspaper by holding students accountable, ensuring appropriate content, and functioning as an adult resource. The language arts teacher April Meyer is the current teacher advisor for the course.

The Navigator has a student Editor-in-Chief. He or she will primarily deal with publishing, advertising, and interacting while also helping with the article process in certain ways.

The class will function as a newspaper with due dates, assignments, peer editing, newspaper advertising, and drafting of articles every month. There will be some additional work, such as reading articles about newspaper writing. This is to ensure quality, understanding, and provide enough hours of work for the newspaper to qualify 0.5 credits for the year. The credit will be able to count as an elective credit.

The class will be structured as a regular EVP class with due dates and meetings.

QUESTIONS?

What can I write about?

The NorthStar Navigator will have a primary focus, NSA. The newspaper functions as NSA’s newspaper; therefore it will relate its content to the school in some way. Students have written about many topics in the past. However, the topic must relate to NSA as a school. This can include student or teacher spotlights, information about events or clubs, and much more!

What is the workload?

The workload will be less than a full-credit class but will still require work consistent with 0.5 credits. Throughout the class, work will consist of reading and responding to articles on newspaper writing, submitting article rough drafts, article editing, peer editing, finalizing articles, and attending EVP meetings. The class is a year-long commitment with the same responsibility as other classes.

When should I sign up?
The class became available for enrollment with all other classes on April 1.

The EVP school year will be from late August through June.

What positions are available?

This is reliant on the number of people who sign up for the class. This is both a newspaper and a class. By the end of the school year, students should have the chance to experience different positions in the newspaper to become well-rounded in their skills. Editing will be a collaboration between all the students. Students will be required to write articles. However, there may be exceptions depending on the student’s role in the newspaper and the size of the class.

How to Enroll

The Navigator is a course offered on Genius like all other NSA courses and can be signed up for like all other NSA courses.
