Exploring the World of Creative Writing

By Avery P.

The world of creative writing is expansive. There are many subcategories of creative writing, including poetry, fiction, fantasy, and more. These come with its own set of challenges. Writer's block is a real issue that can be hard to overcome. Here at NSA, there is a class that can help with that. The Creative Writing class engages students in different writing styles, allows them to study mentor texts, and explores creativity in writing. "Through sentence-focused revision activities, learners refine their craft with precision, honing their ability to wield language effectively" (Creative Writing). In this course, students will develop their knowledge of creative writing styles.

Keziah H., a fellow Navigator journalist, took this class in eighth grade. In this class, Keziah learned different creative writing styles and then wrote scenes in each style. When asked what her favorite part of the class was, she said that she enjoyed reading other people's writing. Additionally, Keziah loved the short introduction to science fiction and fantasy. The creative writing class will take students on a journey through different universes, exploring how that certain universe operates within writing. When asked what she learned from this class, she stated, "I learned that writing is the thing that I most love to do, and that maybe I should be an author someday." As you can see, this course helps students write to their fullest potential.

Another student, Harper, took this class and loved it. When asked about the assignments, she said that "the assignments are enjoyable and fun and really helped me to learn about writing, whether it's about writing a poem, or writing a short story!" The Creative Writing Class allows students to learn the difference between genres. During the duration of this class, peers got to write short stories and plan out their main characters and villains. Harper shared that this was her favorite part of the class. In addition, Harper told the Navigator that this course made her realize writing is what she really loves to do, and a career as an author might be in her future. Furthermore, the Creative Writing course helps further a student's knowledge of writing in general. Harper said that this class helped her become a better writer. Harper said, "This class helped me to learn about the different styles of writing and how to implement them into my own writing."

This course is an excellent elective if you are looking to further your writing career. In this course, students will write intriguing stories, learn about various creative genres, and explore how genre universes work in writing. Take it from two NSA students, this class will add to your knowledge of modern books and English.
