Gaming and Teamwork

Teamwork is everywhere in life. Teamwork is part of businesses, corporations, sports and everything in between. This teamwork can also be found in video games! With video games becoming so popular, parents may be concerned that they do not provide any positive benefits for young brains. Nevertheless, there are, and one is the ability to learn about teamwork in different environments.

One game, Destiny 2, provides this team building experience in a very unique way. Destiny 2 is set in a sci-fi world where you, the guardian, must protect the Earth from an alien invasion. The base game is built around collecting and upgrading your weapons and armor to gain strength for the end game. The end game comes in the form of Raids, which are giant labyrinths of puzzles and boss fights. The Raids require a team of six players to complete, all of whom have to communicate to solve the various challenges. The experience is unique as instead of defending, the players are infiltrating an enemy ship or planet to take down the villain once and for all (Destiny 2).

How does this promote teamwork? Well, each puzzle requires all six players to do something different. The puzzles may also require specific timing to complete! There is no one-man show in these challenges and requires patience and teamwork to complete fully. For example,  one puzzle puts the players in a large room with large replicas of planets floating over pedestals. Four players go to their respective platforms with a planet above it. After defeating a miniboss, each of those four players receives a buff called “enlightened” in which they can see the planets either become white or black. They then must find the odd planet and communicate with the teammate across from them to switch planets. Once aligned properly, the planets will merge to the center and allow the main boss to be defeated (Destiny 2). This puzzle has a lot of moving parts that all players need to play a part in. If one fails, the entire team fails. Communication is key to completion.

These puzzles and challenges provide a fun, unique experience while also teaching players how to work patiently with a team! This learning experience can aid a young mind in the future by teaching them key aspects of teamwork, such as communication, patience, and confidence in both their teammates and themselves. How does one find these teams? One way they can find teams is by looking in clubs such as the Gaming Club at Northstar! This club provides an awesome opportunity to talk to like-minded people who enjoy playing and figuring out games!
