How I Came to the Nav

One thing about me is that I have always loved writing. From a young age, I have loved telling stories through writing. It has always been my favorite school activity! Needless to say, this class caught my eye during freshman year, and I took the course for the first time in tenth grade. I instantly fell in love with all aspects of the NAV. The creative freedom was what appealed to me personally. I could write any kind of article (within reason)that I wanted. From school events, teacher, and student spotlights, Christian articles, and more, the opportunities were endless.
Over the last three years, I have written many different articles, from writing on the history of holidays to interviewing multiple students. However, a favorite of mine is the two-part series on the Reformation and how it has changed schools around the world. It was so interesting to dive into a pivotal time in Christian history and explore how it affects us today, not only in the church but also in schools.
There are many roles at the NAV, but being a journalist appealed to me the most. As a journalist, I wrote an article for every month of the school year. There is a main article and then a secondary article. This class kept me busy and taught me so much. I learned how to construct paragraphs better and how to communicate and ask questions. In this class, I interviewed people about subjects personal to my reader, for example, teachers and what subjects they teach. During this, I learned to ask clear and concise questions and how to put those questions and answers into article form. My writing is more clear and concise because of this class.
My advice to freshmen looking to take this class is to go for it- don’t let your fear stop you from learning more about writing. This class will help you grow exponentially and help develop confidence and writing skills. Students will benefit from this class greatly. In the beginning, it may seem intimidating to sit in a class full of students who have been writing on the NAV for several years. However, these classmates are so welcoming and so helpful that you will feel right at home! I know that I did. This class has shaped me into a better student, and for that I am thankful!
