Macs vs Windows, Debate of the Century

By John R.

Are you a Microsoft Windows person? Or are you a Mac fan? This is a debate that never seems to end. Each side has a following of die-hard fans who insist that their OS (Operating System) has the better performance. Apple, the company that produces the Mac dynasty, is a widely popular OS, but keep in mind, about 90% of the world's computers run some version of Microsoft Windows.

Each OS has their areas of strength, and weakness. First let's talk about possibly the most popular OS in the world: Microsoft Windows. A recent poll on Teams showed that 69% of people preferred Windows. The reason varied, for some, it was that Windows is cheaper. Others said that they grew up with Windows and have used it all their life, so naturally they still use it. Other people said that it's just easier to use. People who prefer Windows usually pick it for its low-cost, and CPU power. Gamers, in particular, prefer Windows over Mac.

Now let's talk about Macs now; Macs are known for their silver, sleek look. However, it's more than a sleek look. In the words of Samuel, a former NSAer: “MacOS is a better user interface.” While this is a common phrase used for both Windows and Mac, it might just be more true for Mac. Macs, if you know how to use them, are very easily navigated. Macs are known because they just work. Macs, unlike Windows, very rarely have issues. But in turn they are a nightmare to troubleshoot when issues do come up. But perhaps the largest downside to Macs is the price. In the above-mentioned poll, it was clearly stated that people wanted a Mac, but it was too expensive.

Now let's look at facts. According to computercures.com: “...some prefer the Mac operating system, while others prefer Windows. Here’s a good metaphor to help you grasp the difference: the Mac is like driving an automatic, whereas Windows is like driving a manual.” Windows leaves you plenty of room to build and customize your device, you can’t really do that with Macs. Windows is flexible, you can change, or add graphics cards, hard drives, RAM, or broken hardware. This generally isn’t possible with Mac. Windows also has much more to offer in terms of Freeware. “There is a copious amount of freeware available to Windows users. We’ll let the stats speak for themselves. Download.com has over 55,000 programs compatible with PC, and just under 5,000 for Mac.”(computercures)

Not to be biased, and so that all the Mac supporters don’t go all pitchforks and knives, we should look at some Mac perks. Macs have a very high satisfaction rating. When people buy a Mac, they are satisfied with it for life. Going back to what Samuel said, macOS is easier to learn. “In general, Mac OS is easier to learn. In fact, since Windows 7, Microsoft seems to be imitating Apple’s simple layout to offer a similar experience to its customers.”(komando.com) Macs also last much longer. It's no secret that Macs are made of high-quality materials. Its aluminum case and perfect corners tends to make production harder, and thus more pricey. Microsoft however uses cheap materials to build their computers. That's why Windows don’t usually last as long.

Over all, both OSs have their perks, and their downsides. And despite all reason, and no matter how many facts, magazines, books, articles, and stories are published, there will always be the Mac vs PC debate. Each side has a following of loyal patrons who would rather die than see their favorite OS in dishonor. But, the funny part is that the debate even exists. Both computers suit different needs. Different budgets require different computers, different jobs require different specs. In the end, you should choose the one that you need. You might spend a little more money on the Mac, but the extra money will give you some amazing attention to detail and quality. Windows is by far the most widely used, because it's versatile, and adaptable. Both have their bad traits, but they also have their good ones.
