By Lydia N.

Welcome to Part 2! If you haven’t read Part 1, be sure to scroll down to the bottom of this article to see the link to the first part where we meet The StuCo Coordinator and The Leadership Team!

Student Council is a big group of students and mentors all working together for the good of NorthStar. As such, there are quite a few people and roles to explain. In Part 2 of this article, I’ll be talking about The Outreach Team and The Communications Team.

The Outreach Team:

About: The Outreach Team helps plan events and reach out to new and returning NSA students to get them involved in fun activities and events! The Special Projects Coordinators help with event planning and work on many different projects around campus. Welcome Committee Leaders help plan mixers and calls to provide a welcoming environment for all students, as well as reach out to new NSAers to get them involved in the community. They also lead the Welcome Committee, a group of students dedicated to helping new students feel welcome!

Mentors

Mrs. Peterman - Mentor for the Special Projects Coordinators:  I work with our Special Projects Coordinators, Jared and Elena. I grew up in Pennsylvania, spent a few years in South Carolina and Georgia, and then moved to Canada in 2002. [...] This is my eighth year teaching English at NorthStar, and I also taught in a brick-and-mortar school for years. My favorite thing about teaching is being able to connect with my students. When I’m not working, I’m usually reading a mystery novel, going for a walk, or watching a baseball or football game.

Mrs. Smith - Mentor for the Welcome Committee Leaders: I started working with NSA in February of 2016 after teaching music in public and private schools in Texas, Virginia and Mississippi. I am married to Andrew, and we have 4 children; Sarah Joy (20), Katie Grace (17), Pace (14), and Asher (11). Andrew and I have been married since June of 2000. We currently live in North Carolina, where Andrew is Associate Pastor of Worship and Administration.

As the Student Success Coach at NSA, I work to help all families onboard and learn to use the NSA systems, and I have the privilege of working one-on-one to assist students who are struggling with their pacing and scheduling as they work through their courses. In addition to serving at NSA, I serve alongside my husband at our church.

I love to read, watch movies, play board games with family and friends, and watch my children participate in their various activities.

I even found in my personal life how one joke or one funny thing can make that bad time really bright. I also love just being creative, as it let’s me test the possibilities of so many things. It allows me to make the “What if” questions i’ve had a reality and still have fun with it!

I'm so thankful to be a part of StuCo this year as a Content Creator.  Outside of school, I ride horses and compete in ranch riding, which is a sport in the western equestrian world.  I also enjoy writing and playing the piano. This year I'm really just looking forward to learning how StuCo works online and how we plan events in an online format.  I'm also super excited to work with all of the wonderful officers and get to know them better.
