Nav on Holiday

The Navigator ended in June, and all the writers went their separate ways. Sometimes it's easy to forget that people we know from NSA have lives outside of school. In this article, let’s check on what the Nav writers were doing this offseason.

John had a very eventful summer spending lots of time in America. He went to his brother’s college graduation and wedding. After that, John spent a couple of months in New Hampshire where he went shopping and visited with family and friends. At the end of August, he went home and redecorated his room as his older brother moved out which meant John was the only child in the house.

Aaron also had a really fun summer, fishing and cooking. He says, “This summer, I was able to go fishing on my family's boat on our local lake, as well as go swimming there. I caught my biggest fish yet: a 3.8 pound largemouth bass.” He also had a couple cookouts with his extended family. With his parents, Aaron toured the Oceanographic Institution. Lastly, he made and ate ravioli, including lobster ravioli.

One of our new writers, Jonah, stayed close to home during the summer. He lives in the United Arab Emirates. He went to Sea World which had just opened in Abu Dhabi. Jonah said, “It was interesting because unlike the Sea Worlds in America, the one here was completely indoors. They had things from sharks to Walruses.”

Many other Navigator writers got to do some fun stuff this summer. Lydia, our editor-in- chief, went to the NSA graduation. She also got to go to a weeklong theater summer camp. Onyi, another new writer, did some cross country training and once in a while she would go to the library and read novels and plays. Avery and Chesed, two more of our new writers, hung out with friends all summer. Avery went to church and also was a counselor at her church’s kids camp. Chesed went on lots of hikes during the summer.

Mrs. Meyer had an extremely exciting summer break. She moved from Wisconsin to Indiana. This was so her two daughters could live at home while they went to college in Indiana (Bethel University and St. Mary’s University at Notre Dame). For the 4th of July, Mrs. Meyer went back to her hometown in Michigan to celebrate. Mrs. Meyer also spent time in her new city. She says “We figured out how to get around at our new home and found the Chick-fil-A right down the road from us.” In her free time, Mrs. Meyer painted and painted some more.

As for me, this summer I went on a volunteer trip to Sri Lanka. I got to visit a tea factory and see the whole process from tea leaves to tea grounds. I am not a tea drinker, so even though the tea was considered to be the best in the world, I could not really tell. I got to take a scenic train ride through the mountains and down to the coast. The best part of the trip was visiting the Buddhist temples and seeing the view from there.

I hope you have enjoyed catching up with the writers from the Nav and getting to hear about what they did on summer break. The Navigator also had to rethink the way it does images over the summer, but of course that’s a tale for another time.
