I knew the process of going to college was somewhat of a chore, but I did not quite expect all that has already transpired. A college search and ultimate application was a long process that both went better then what I expected and was more overwhelming then I could have imagined.

I’ve heard horror stories of how bad this process could be. I’ve heard stories of the long, strenuous process of constant disappointment, but thankfully, that is not the fate I found in my own experience. In fact, it is not a fate most people encounter at all! Arguably, the most tedious part is the process of applying for scholarships, which is something one should be doing constantly. However, scholarships are also not nearly as hard as I initially expected, as I didn’t understand that colleges offer scholarships of their own as well. This same feeling applies to applying to colleges, too! The initial thought felt so overwhelming and long, but once you start the process, it becomes repeatable information you plop into the site in a matter of minutes. As with everything, practice makes accuracy quicker, so your first application will always be the longest.

What an application doesn’t mean, however, is acceptance. Thankfully, in my own experience, I have been accepted into every college I’ve applied to (at least so far), but that didn’t come without its heart attacks! In one instance, I was sent an email for a college I was considering that was congratulating me on being accepted. I was a little confused as I hadn’t finished the application yet but knew I sent in my test scores before I completed the application, so I passed the confusion off as me simply forgetting to finish it. Fast forward to several hours later, and the college emails me again apologizing for the false email and that they would be glad to accept my full application if I so chose. You can not imagine the heart attack I had in those moments! However, it proved to be a very good reminder that the people on the other end of the screen are still human, and mistakes can happen. Do not grow impatient or angry at a college because of a legitimate mistake or mishap, and be aware that false acceptance could happen. The best thing to do is laugh it off and go on with your applications!
