NSA’s Student Council (StuCo) is a team of responsible and dedicated individuals who desire to serve their school. “My goal is that StuCo only continues to foster and encourage that unique sense of community that NSA has, allowing it to continually impact students for many more years,” StuCo President Michaela said in an interview. Throughout the year, StuCo plans events, creates activities, and aims to engage the school’s community.
StuCo hosts three main events throughout the school year: Back 2 School Bash, Christmas Radio Show, and Summer Celebration. Michaela mentioned that each StuCo team is unique and so are the events they plan. Year to year, every Student Council evaluates the wants of the student body. They then design events based on student interests, so while these events may exist right now, StuCo is constantly evolving.
StuCo members have numerous tasks they complete on a regular basis. When asked what her work looks like on a week-to-week basis Michaela answered that she is “expected to attend weekly EVP meetings, plan events, work with the team on brainstorming activities for the community, and be engaged with the community.” Additionally, as president, she also oversees the work of all team members, communicates with advisors, and works with the executive team to make decisions. StuCo relies on teamwork.
There are many distinct roles that students can take on within the Student Council. The positions include nine officers and four representatives for a grand total of thirteen members. The president, vice president, and secretary make up the executive team, and the advertising coordinator and content creator are the communications team. There are two club coordinators, two welcome committee leaders, and high school, middle school, and elementary school representatives. Each StuCo member has individual responsibilities as well as contributing to the overall team. The process to obtain one of these positions actually starts in March or April of the previous school year.
Being elected to Student Council is a four-step process. First, there are nominations. NSA students can nominate their peers for StuCo positions. After nominations have finished, the nominees can apply for their respective role. These applications are then reviewed by an election committee. Students that are accepted by the election committee are permitted to run for StuCo. Then, they campaign to the student body. After campaigning is finished, NorthStar students can vote for their preferred candidate. These votes determine who make up Student Council.
As with everything at NSA, StuCo incorporates a Biblical worldview. Specifically, they focus on servant leadership. Michaela expressed that StuCo aims to “keep our eyes on Christ… we want to make sure that we're using our abilities to ultimately glorify Him and serve others.” Along with serving the school’s community, StuCo desires to encourage NSA’s sense of culture and community. “NSA has such a unique community and it's something that has blessed me so much throughout my several years here,” Michaela conveyed in an interview. Regardless of how many events or activities they plan, Student Council cannot foster the sense of community it strives to without student involvement.
Students can reach out to any StuCo member in order to get plugged into the community. There are volunteer positions, events, clubs, and more. Additionally, members love to hear from students, and they are always happy to receive feedback from the community. When asked what she would like NorthStar Academy students to know about StuCo, Michaela stated, “Everything we do is for you! All the events, activities, teams, etc. are to make your NSA experience fun and enjoyable.”
