The summer is historically the best time for movies. Most people are out of school and looking for things to do. Studios want to capitalize on this by releasing some of their biggest movies over the break. This means that, just like other summers, this past summer had no shortage of movies to see in the theater. While the quality of the movies varied, there were certainly some exciting releases. However, the question being asked today is not what I think of any of these movies, but rather what the opinion of students here at NSA is.
Two of the more notable movies that came out this summer were both superhero films, the likes of Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps. Out of the students polled, 31.3% went to see Superman, while only 18.8% saw Fantastic Four. One student had this to say about Superman, “[it] was funny, had cool fight scenes, and highly memorable scenes.” On the other hand, there were not so many positive comments on Fantastic Four. “It was boring to me,” another student replied, “no real build up with an obvious ending.”
Another big movie that came out this summer was Jurassic World: Rebirth. Another sequel in a franchise that should probably be extinct, NSA students were not impressed. “It was disappointing,” a student commented, “It felt like a very simple plot…. It was honestly a forgettable addition to the series.” “It’s not that it was bad,” another student chimed in, “I just didn’t find it the most exciting or interesting movie.” Despite the negative sentiment, 31.3% of those surveyed went to see it, similar to the percentage that saw Superman.
By far the most popular movie from over the summer was How to Train Your Dragon. The remake of the beloved animated film was watched by 50% of students in the poll! One student replied, “It’s my all time favorite childhood movie and their recreation of the animated one was perfect.” Another student echoed a similar sentiment saying, “I enjoyed the storyline and music. The live action was really similar to the original.”
Probably the movie that got the most polarizing results was Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. One student said the following, “It was such an amazing movie with a great plot and… it has Tom Cruise!” However, other students did not feel the same way. With probably the best quote from the survey, this student replied, “If you want to see a short man do the same thing he did in the last 17 movies, go watch it. Otherwise, just don’t.” Nevertheless, despite this one comment, people were generally favorable towards the movie.
There were many movies that came out this summer, some great, some not so great, and some that have not even been mentioned. These were some of the most notable movies talked about by students here at NSA. With that said, it turns out Tom Cruise is 5ft 7 inches - around 1.7 m (Hansen, Erika). Is that short? If it is, I am in trouble.
