NSA Around the World: South America

By Keziah H.

On our tour of the NSA world, just below North America, is a large and diverse continent–South America! It is filled with amazing people, animals, landmarks, and food that you can find nowhere else, like the massive statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil or the lush tropical forests in French Guiana. To some people, South America is a place so beautiful that it hardly seems real. To others, it is simply home. Either way, it makes a great place to live in and to visit. Our South America adventure begins now!

To Zoe B., our Navigator writer who lives in Argentina, South America is a wonderful place to call home. In her opinion, “The food is amazing (some of my favorites being asado, dulce de leche, and empanadas), but I also love the emphasis there is on community. People care about being together with friends and families in ways I haven't seen in other places. It's so easy to find a community, whether by bonding over a sports team, hobby, or just meeting someone anywhere. These communities are also united in a way that is refreshing to see.” For her, the loving nature of her community makes it easy to form lasting friendships, because the people care so much about their families, friends, and neighbors.

On the other end of the continent, Catie shares her experiences of what life was like when she was in Brazil: “Some of my favorite parts about it is how so much revolves around hospitality. Sharing meals around favorite dishes like Feijoada and Churrasco, and also how we're a very social people in general.” Interestingly, this is similar to Argentina and their focus on food and community, though the actual activities and dishes are different. Catie also enjoys being with other girls in Brazil. According to her, “All the girls there LOVE dressing up all fancy and very feminine with makeup and dresses, and we love music and dancing like Samba and so these things attribute to our loudness.” These things make Brazil a fun and vibrant country for visitors and citizens alike.

Like the hospitable cultures in Africa and Asia, South Americans have a desire to care for one another and show each other respect. This is something that we should strive to follow in our own cultures as well. Kindness and understanding will help all societies to thrive! With that, we conclude our trip to South America. See you next time!
