NSA Memories

After four wonderful years at this school, it has been nice to look back and remember how I got here. If I had been told five years ago that many of my best friends would be at an online school, I would have been shocked, and maybe would not have believed it. But now I get to experience this every day, learning new concepts, meeting new people, and doing new things. It has really been a blessing for me to have a community as close as my computer. It teaches me that I can make a difference in the world, even though I am just one person.

Before my family and I were considering NSA as an option, we were in America visiting family. Because we knew that we would be there for almost a year, my parents had enrolled me and my two brothers in public school for nine weeks. After the forty-five school days were over, my brothers and I agreed that it had been a bad experience. To me, the classes and teachers were okay, and in some instances, very engaging. The students, on the other hand, could be quite mean. I also realized that public school was not the right fit for me. Rushing to classes and panicking about missing assignments was difficult. Not to mention how good I was at getting lost: On the first day, I somehow managed to go to the sixth grade math class instead of the eighth. So, it was not hard to guess that my favorite day of public school was also my last. I was very glad when finally those days were over.

After nine weeks of public school, it was a little hard to know what to do next. We were not able to use a homeschool curriculum with live classes, because we were starting in October instead of August. And we had just left public school to go 622 miles down the United States, because we were moving again. We couldn’t go right back into public school after that (not to mention that we would rather not go again). So, we decided to try something new. Our friends had recommended it to us a while before, and they said they really enjoyed it, so we decided to try it too, since Northstar does offer flexible classes. Since we had to switch nine weeks into the year, we had to finish a whole school year in only three fourths of the time, and that was without procrastinating. It was a rough year.

Now, however, I am much more used to NSA and its busy, but engaging curriculum. I have been here for almost four years, and even though things have not always been easy, there have been so many things that I have enjoyed. Learning new concepts in new ways, getting to have fun writing with the Creative Writing Club, and making friends–these are all things that I could not have had if I had chosen a different school. God has blessed me in so many ways, and I am so thankful for all of the amazing things about NSA.

Keziah H. lives in East Africa with her parents, two brothers, and a mischievous puppy named Bandit. This is her fourth year at Northstar but her first year at the Navigator. She likes to read almost any book she can get her hands on, but especially fantasy books. She also enjoys creative writing, coming up with awesome ideas with her brothers, and playing outside. She has been writing stories ever since she can remember and hopes to be an author when she grows up.
